A national research institute came to us. You know the type – serious people, working on serious stuff. Aerospace, high-end testing, that kind of thing.
They had a problem. Actually, three problems.
First, they needed pressure sensors. Really good ones. Their spec originally pointed to Kulite – the HKM series. Solid choice. No argument there.
Second problem? Lead time. Kulite would take months. Months. Their project couldn’t wait that long. You know how these government-backed projects go – deadlines don’t move.
Third problem was even trickier. The space they had to install the sensor? Ridiculously small. Like, “how do we even fit anything here” small. And the sensor had to be light. Really light.
So yeah. They needed a Kulite alternative. Fast. And tiny.
Why Kulite Wasn’t Going to Work This Time
Look, I’m not here to bad‑mouth Kulite. Their stuff works. It’s accurate, it’s tough, it’s been in fighter jets and rockets for decades.
But here’s the thing. the lead time is too long for client’s project, we all know, the lead time of kulite about 7month, even 12 month for some special product.
They don’t have time to wait , and need a alternative product.
Plus, like I said, the size. Even the smaller Kulite models were just too long for their mounting point. You can’t bend physics. If it doesn’t fit, it doesn’t fit.
So they started looking around for a alternative. Someone who could match Kulite’s performance but actually deliver in weeks, not months. And maybe – just maybe – build something smaller.
That’s When They Found the MPT500
We sent them a standard MPT500 first. Just to see if the core performance was there.
And honestly? It was pretty close.
0.1% accuracy. -40°C to 125°C range. Natural frequency above 400kHz. Stainless steel body. All the important stuff checked out.
They tested it. Called us back. Said, “The performance is fine. Really. But we need it smaller. And lighter. Can you do that?”
Most suppliers would say no. Our professional engineers have provided a perfect solution.
How We Shrunk the Thing Down to 19mm
Here’s what we did.
We took the MPT500 and completely rethought the housing. Trimmed everything non‑essential. Got the sensor body down to about 19 millimeters. That’s tiny. Like, smaller than a lot of people’s thumb.
But we didn’t stop there.
The amplifier – normally inside the sensor – we pulled it out. Put it in a separate little box, connected by a shielded cable. That made the sensor itself way lighter. Because the amplifier is usually a chunk of the weight.
So now you’ve got this super small, super light sensor head. And the amplifier sits somewhere else, doing its job without taking up space in the tight spot.
And the best part? The performance didn’t change. Still 0.1% accuracy. Still clean signal. No extra noise. Nothing.
Sometimes simple ideas work the best, you know?

What Happened When They Tested It
They put the custom sensor through their full validation. All the usual stuff – accuracy, repeatability, thermal drift, vibration.
Passed everything.
But the real win was when they actually tried to install it. It fit. Like a glove. The weight was so low they almost laughed.
And the lead time? We delivered in 6 weeks. Not months.
The project leader told us something like, “This is exactly what we needed. Same performance as Kulite, but the size and weight are night and day. And you guys actually delivered when you said you would.”
So What’s the Lesson Here?
For this institute, the real problem wasn’t performance. It was time and space. And we solved both by actually listening and doing something custom.
That’s the part I like about our job. You don’t just ship boxes. You figure out what’s actually stopping the customer from moving forward, and you fix it.
In this case, it was a 19mm sensor with an external amplifier. Next time, it might be something else. But the attitude is the same.
Quick Look: What We Can Customize on the MPT500
Just so you get an idea – here’s what we can tweak:
- Length – down to ~19mm, sometimes smaller
- Weight – move amplifier outside, drop a lot of grams
- Amplifier – inside, outside, remote, whatever works
- Output – 0-100mV, 0.5-4.5V, RS485
- Pressure range – 0 to 35 MPa, custom calibration
- Thread – M5×0.8, 10-32 UNF, or tell us what you need
- Temp compensation – multiple bands from -40°C up to 125°C
- Delivery – weeks, not months
A Few Questions People Actually Ask
Can this really replace a Kulite HKM?
Mostly yes. If you’re under 125°C and 100 MPa, you’re fine. Extreme high temp or ultra‑high pressure? Then we talk.
Does making it smaller hurt accuracy?
No. We don’t touch the sensing part. Just the housing and amplifier location. Accuracy stays 0.1%.
Does the external amplifier pick up noise?
Not with good shielding and grounding. We’ve done this before.
How small can you actually go?
19mm we’ve done. Want smaller? Tell us your number. We’ll see.
Can I get a sample?
Yeah. For real projects, we do samples. You test. You decide.
